Now that you have a website, you want to take advantage of useful tools to monitor your website’s traffic? But how? In this quick tutorial, we will show you how to add Google Analytics on your WordPress website.
This tutorial is for self-hosted WordPress websites.
The first step is to create a Google Analytics account. If you have already created your GA account, you can skip this step.
To sign up for Google Analytics, go to http://www.google.com/analytics and follow the steps to Get Started with Google Analytics here.
Once you have created an account, setup your Property.
To setup your website property, go to the Account “Admin” on top tab.
If you have several accounts, choose the account on which you want to add the property. Under the Property column, select Create New Property in the drop down menu.
Choose the Website and add the Website Name.
Then enter your website URL (www.yourdomain.com). Make sure you enter the correct URL format.
Set the Industry Category and Reporting Time Zone of your website.
Once you are done, click the .js Tracking Info under your Property setting to get your javascript code.
Click the Tracking Code.
There are several ways to add the tracking code to your website. One option is  adding the UA Tracking ID on your website’s SEO plugin.
We will use the tracking code instead at this time. So, go ahead and copy the Universal Analytics tracking code, and then proceed to your website.
Some WordPress themes have the option of adding the GA tracking code on the “Theme Options”.  Log in to your Wordpress dashboard and look for the Appearance on the left side menu of your dashboard. Look for “Theme Options” or “Theme Settings”.
If your theme doesn’t provide this feature of editing the Theme without going through the “Editor”, I suggest you download a plugin.
Download Insert Header Footer plugin to insert the tracking code you copied from your Google Analytics.
On your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins > and then click Add New > then search for the plugin “Insert Header Footer”. Install and then activate the plugin.
After activating the plugin, go to Settings > then look for Insert Header and Footer
On the Header section, paste the tracking code you copied from Google Analytics property. Don’t forget to save your changes.
That’s it! Let me know if you have any questions.
